Only Make One Stop to the Pharmacy for the Entire Month

The holiday season has arrived, and with that brings a lot to do in a short amount of time. Everyone can agree that this is the busiest time of the year, so what can we do to make things easier? How would you like if your pharmacy staff stepped in to help save some of your valuable time this winter?

During the upcoming winter months, we at Hyde Drug Store are focusing our attention on ways to make the lives of our patients easier. We decided to come up with strategies that will allow you to have to make only one stop to the pharmacy each month. Yes, that’s right- only one trip to the pharmacy for the entire month. We absolutely love seeing all of our patients multiple times each month in the store, but in reality, we all know how inconvenient it can be coming to the pharmacy a couple times each week to pick up a prescription. With the holiday season in full swing and snowy weather on the way, there is no better time than right now to learn more about how you can work with us to coordinate all of your medications to be picked up on the same day.

There are a few different options that we can use to coordinate your medications, and you will be able to choose the one that works best for you. One option is simply scheduling all of your refills to be filled on a designated date of your choice. We will handle all of your refills and instead of having to remember to call us, we will call you to notify you that all of your prescriptions are ready. The other option takes convenience one step further. Not only will we do everything listed above, but we can also pre-package all of your medications for you in weekly bubble packages! Both options will allow you to spend less time making multiple trips to the pharmacy every month and spend more time preparing for the holidays this winter.

All of these services are free to our patients, and you will receive a promotional coupon on select OTC items if you get started today! And don’t forget, we also offer free county-wide delivery 6 days/week!

Contact Us

So are you tired of running out of refills and calling in one prescription at a time? New Castle’s oldest pharmacy, half a decade under family ownership

NEW CASTLE, PA – Hyde Drug Store, the oldest pharmacy in New Castle, is celebrating their 40th year of ownership under the Stefanis family. Hyde Drug Store has operated in New Castle for 128 years. In 1978, the current owner, George Stefanis, bought the business after graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. Since then, Stefanis and his family have carried on the Hyde family’s original commitment to their patients and patrons.

“Over the last 40 years, Hyde Drug Store has grown as New Castle grew,” said George Stefanis, current owner of Hyde Drug Store. “We service a wider area than when I first began, just not the immediate local area and deliver to people much farther away from our pharmacy than we did initially. We use the latest technology to serve our patients so that we’re more than just a pharmacy that dispenses medications.

“Our primary mission as an independent pharmacy is to not only treat patients, advise patients, and dispense their medicine, but to know who they are. I believe I have maintained this mission, which the Hyde family began over 100 years ago because that is how I believe all community pharmacies should operate. I have been able to utilize the latest technology, but yet never stray from the original values of the Hyde family.

“We are very proud of our latest service, which is compliance packaging. This service is offered for no charge, and we deliver the completed packages with the medications in the correct pods on whatever schedule the patient prefers at no cost to the patient. We have been able to help patients and their caregivers keep a patient in their homes, rather than move them to a facility.”

“In the years to come, we are going to continue our long tradition of focusing on our patients as people, not a prescription,” said Spero Stafanis, son of George Stefanis and current pharmacist at Hyde Drug Store. “We have plans to expand into patient care services that range anywhere from diabetes education to weight management, all provided within our pharmacy. As long as the pharmacy world keeps changing and evolving, Hyde Drug Store will evolve with it!”

Hyde Drug Store was originally opened 128 years ago by Alfred Hyde. Hyde and his son ran the business with the well-being of their customers in mind. This tradition continues today.

Hyde Drug Store is the oldest pharmacy in Pennsylvania and has been a family a family owned and operated by the Stefanis family for 40 years. As a staple of the New Castle community for years, Hyde Drug Store has served thousands of patients. Along with filling prescriptions, Hyde also offers a variety of health products and services.

Valsartan Recall Blog Post

According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 103 million adults have high blood pressure in the U.S. This is nearly half of all adults in the country. On July 13th, the FDA announced a voluntary recall on some products that contain the active ingredient valsartan, which is a common medicine used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. This article will tell you everything you need to know about the recall, including FDA updates and how this will impact your treatment.

Recall Statement

The recall was issued due to the presence of an impurity, called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), that was found in the products. These recalled products were supplied to companies by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals in China. The presence of this impurity was thought to be a result of the manufacturing process. NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen, meaning that it is a substance that could cause cancer. Although the amounts of NDMA detected were small, the FDA considers them to be unacceptable and issued the recall.

Recalled Products

The FDA is continuing to investigate the recall and post updates online at this time. Not all medications that contain valsartan are involved in the recall, so it is important to check with your doctor and pharmacist to see if you are impacted by the recall. Below is a link to the FDA’s list of recalled products.

Patient Information

This recall has left patients with many questions and concerns. The biggest concern is the cancer risk. According to the FDA, patients who were prescribed one of the recalled products have a very low cancer risk. The FDA estimates that 8,000 patients would need to take the recalled valsartan 320 mg daily, which is the highest dose available, for 4 years to possibly lead to one additional lifetime diagnosis of cancer.

Patients can reference the link above or contact the pharmacy to determine if they are affected by the recall. For those who are taking the recalled valsartan-containing medicines, the FDA recommends that patients should continue taking their medicine until they have a replacement product. Valsartan is used to treat serious conditions, such as high blood pressure or heart failure, and should not be suddenly stopped without a replacement medication. There are other medications in the same drug class as valsartan that are safe, affordable alternatives for patients to use in place of their recalled medication.

What is CBD?

Many people have heard about a natural alternative that is becoming more popular in the medical community. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural remedy that is gaining widespread attention in the news and around the country. After hearing about this product, you may be interested in learning more about its benefits. This article will outline the basics of CBD and the health benefits that it can provide.

What  is CBD?

CBD is one of many naturally occurring compounds called cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. Cannabis is a plant category that includes hemp and marijuana. Despite this similarity, hemp and marijuana are very different. CBD is the top non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in hemp, meaning that it does not have the ability to change the state of mind of a person that uses it.

Is CBD Legal?

CBD is federally legal in all states when properly derived from industrial hemp. The main reason for the legalization of CBD from hemp is due to the lack of THC in the hemp plant. THC, which is short for tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main component of marijuana that causes the “high” sensation and mind-altering effects of the plant. CBD from hemp has less than 0.3% THC, allowing it to provide a therapeutic benefit to patients without experiencing any mind-altering effects.

How Does CBD Work?

Our body has a system called the Endocannabinoid System, which acts as a control center that has a network of receptors that act as messengers in many areas of the human body, such as the brain, spinal cord, immune system, gastrointestinal tract, etc. These chemical messengers are released to regulate and maintain an optimal balance in the body.

Benefits of CBD

Research on CBD is ongoing at this time and new therapeutic uses are being discovered. The top conditions that consumers are using CBD for are pain, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. According to data collected in a 2017 CBD Expert Report, 80% of CBD users found it to be an extremely effective treatment option.

Dosage Forms of CBD

There are many different dosage forms available for patients to choose from. The most common forms are oral formulations, such as capsules, syrup, gummies, or oral tinctures. The oil tincture is supplied in a dropper and is used sublingually for a faster onset of action. There are also topical forms available that are great options for localized pain treatment. Dosage may vary depending on the type of product that you are using and what you are using it for. Stop by and talk to one of our pharmacists today to learn more about which CBD product is right for you!

Sunscreen Guide: How to Avoid Sunburn This Summer

With the summer season in full effect, consumers will see many sunscreen options with different ingredients and question which will work best for them. Sunburn is a major risk factor for skin cancer, which is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. Although applying sunscreen may seem like a simple task, many people do not know when to apply sunscreen, how often to reapply, and how much to apply. One study showed that a third of Americans get sunburned each year. This article will outline everything you need to know about sunscreen to stay safe while enjoying the summer sun.

How Does it Work?

Sunscreens are made with ingredients that help to protect the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Both UVA and UVB rays can damage the skin, but the UVB rays are the major cause of sunburn. The ingredients in sunscreen are able to reflect or absorb the rays to prevent sunburn. Some sunscreens are labeled as “broad-spectrum”, which means that they will provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

What is SPF?

SPF, which stands for Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how well the sunscreen protects against UVB rays that will damage the skin. Most sunscreens that have an SPF of 15 or above will provide adequate coverage against UVB rays. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the best sunscreen will provide broad-spectrum protection, is water-resistant, and has an SPR of at least 30. Any sunscreens with SPF values higher than 50 do not provide any additional protection than products that are SPF 50.

Who Should Use Sunscreen?

Anyone over 6 months of age should use sunscreen. Sunscreen use should be avoided on babies under 6 months due to the risk of skin irritation and their increased sensitivity to the sunlight. Parents should avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. People with fair skin are at a greater risk for skin cancer than those with darker skin, but UV rays can be damaging to any type of skin. All people should use sunscreen regardless of skin color or ethnicity.

How Do I Use Sunscreen?

Sunscreen should be applied 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the ingredients to fully bind to the skin. In order to ensure that you get the full SPF of a sunscreen, you should apply about an ounce to your entire body. Reapplication is an important part of proper sunscreen use, and is often the main cause of sunburn. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating, for optimal protection.

What Type of Sunscreen is Best?

All sunscreens, whether it is a spray or a lotion, are equally effective. The important aspect is how they are applied. The term “organic” on sunscreen is meaningless. The FDA regulates sunscreens and does not have a definition for the term organic, so choosing an “organic” sunscreen does not guarantee that it contains organic ingredients. Sunscreens are formulated to remain effective for 3 years. However, heat can speed up the expiration and degrade the ingredients, so make sure to store your sunscreen out of direct sunlight.

Medication Synchronization at Hyde Drug Store

Approximately 69 million Americans take three or more prescriptions per month, requiring multiple trips to the pharmacy. Many consumers say they miss doses of their medications because they forget to refill their prescription before they run out. Missed or skipped doses of medication cause 125,000 deaths every year and account for 10 to 25 percent of hospital and nursing home admissions.

Cost, forgetfulness, and complicated medication regimens drive poor patient medication adherence. Medication synchronization, incorporating your pharmacist, can improve patient adherence and persistence by bundling medications, which helps decrease the frequency of pharmacy visits and reduce the negative effects of forgetfulness and complicated regimens. It also helps to decrease total healthcare costs.

Once enrolled in medication synchronization, our pharmacists will review your medication list with you and create a plan to synchronize them in order for you to pick them all up on the same day each month. We will call to confirm your monthly pick up date each month and discuss with you any changes that may have occurred during the previous month. The pharmacy will then prepare your medications prior to your visit. Next, you visit your pharmacy to pick up your medications and discuss with the pharmacist any questions you may have.

One of the biggest complaints for patients is the long wait times associated with waiting for your prescriptions to be prepared for you in your pharmacy. By enrolling in medication synchronization, your pharmacy will proactively fill your medications prior to your visit. This will allow you to essentially walk up to the pharmacy counter, ask for your prescriptions, and walk out.

In addition to the benefits above, medication synchronization helps create a relationship between you are your pharmacist. Your relationship with your pharmacist should be similar to your other practitioners. Use these monthly meetings to ask questions about your medications: how do they work, when is the best time to take the medications, and how to improve your outcomes.

Contact Us

If you or your loved one is a patient who takes multiple monthly medications you may benefit from this program. Contact us a call or stop in so we can help you enroll in this free service and help you be well.

Seasonal Allergies

If you suddenly begin to sneeze, cough, have watery eyes, or have a runny nose, you’re being rudely reminded by mother nature that allergy season has begun. Allergy season timing and severity can vary based on many different climate factors, but spring allergies caused by tree pollination can begin as early as February. Allergies can be much more than a nuisance to some people and treating them can be an around-the-clock task.

What Causes Seasonal Allergies?

Allergic rhinitis, also known as seasonal allergies, is a disorder of the nose that is induced by a substance, such as pollen. The exposure to the substance triggers a hypersensitivity reaction in the body that causes the allergy symptoms to begin.

The first and most obvious recommendation is prevention. Try to avoid triggers that cause you to experience these allergic reactions. If you cannot avoid them, you can monitor pollen counts from your local weather service and go outside when these counts are low. When you return home, shower and clean the clothes that you were wearing during the day because they are likely covered in pollen and other allergens from outdoors. When drying clothes, use a clothes dryer instead of hanging them on a clothesline outside. When you are inside, instead of opening windows and doors for circulation, use air conditioning.

OTC Treatment Options

Oftentimes, these techniques to avoid the allergens aren’t enough. There are hoards of allergy medicines available without prescription.

  1. Antihistamines are first-line over-the-counter options for mild to moderate allergy symptoms. They are effective in treating itching, sneezing, and runny noses.
  2. Intranasal corticosteroids are the most effective treatment for nasal congestion associated with seasonal allergies. They are favored over oral medications to treat moderate to severe allergic rhinitis.
  3. Decongestants (oral and intranasal) are also used to relieve nasal congestion caused by allergies. They are generally reserved for more severe symptoms and are not considered first line options.

Stop by the Hyde Drug Store today to talk to one of our pharmacists about how to manage your seasonal allergies this year!
